(RE)LEARNING PHP programming

The Transition from a Web Designer to a Web Developer has been a continuing process in my line of work as I now embark on a "re-learning" task to know and understand PHP programming (again) in preparation on upcoming projects which involve PHP specially the Wordpress blogging system and themes.

Programming in general was one of my dreams but the idea of understanding programming concepts has not yet "sinked" in since my last PHP short-course class. I do envy the people who are really good in this kind of field and with that idea I was challenged and I understand I TOO can do programming. It's just a matter of time that things would "sink" in to mind.

As a short introduction for those who don't know what PHP is, It is an open source (meaning free) and multi-platform (meaning can be run on Windows, Linux, Mac, Solaris, Unix operating systems) web programming. Most web applications are based (partially or purely) on PHP. Some classic examples are the email sites that we usually login most of the time. The codes that handles the process of accessing your emails are mostly handled by server-side scripts which are coded in PHP.

Changing Work Shifts: My First Two Months in My current work

Working for an International Information Technology company has its "highs" and "lows" (but mostly "highs"). I get to meet nice and interesting people overseas as well as improvement on my skills as a Web Developer/Graphic Designer as the work goes on.

Also I get to experience working on both day and night shifts, which REALLY is the most trying experience. Both shift have their pros and cons.

Me during Day Shifts

Day Shift: No body clock adjustment, you work all day, sleep at night. Simply as is. The only slight problems is that I can't do anything when personal requirements are need to tend to (like SSS, Philhealth, etc.) I have to ask permission to comply those.

Me and my workmates - My Night shift days

Night Shift: Body clock need adjustments, I can barely sleep on days (8 hour would be a miracle, 6 hours the most is I can do.). I would miss my wife (and baby :D) on nights. On the other hand, I can go to places and attend to appointments on the afternoon when needed(I'm asleep the whole morning). And the best of all the "Night Differentials"(extra pay for those wake-up on nights :D).

Now I'm back on Day shift. The reason? Paternal reasons. I'm expecting a baby in 3 month time. And my wife needs my attention during nights. As a soon-to-be father, I have an obligation to do. So I thanked my client for the consideration. Back to work for now...'til then.

My Kapuso experience: A summary

Working for a Big Television Network was a great experience. I have seen and learn the perks of being in a broadcasting field of work. Going to places within the Davao City in which there are significant events happened (or happening). Being a studio-remote engineer was hectic but fun. I get to meet some of the local celebrities, get to know some local officials and other people that made the news. Now that I have moved on to another company, my experience with GMA will always be one of my highlight moments of my life. I will always be a "Kapuso."

Update for the Month of May

Been so busy as of late that I haven't post a blog in 2 months. The busiest was the part of the ELEKSYON 2007 coverage in which we have endured 36 hours of work. We also have several tapings for Kuyaw TV on some remote areas.

The PANATA

Being part of a broadcast industry is a great experience. My latest event was being part of the "Panata" plug shooting ("Panata" means "Devotion" in Filipino) which showcases the devotion of our News and Public Affairs in serving the filipino people ("Serbisyong Totoo").

One Helluva Week

Last week was one helluva week for me. My schedule was packed and we have several remote assignments . As what we naturally say - "it's part of the job!" , nevertheless , It's was an enjoyable one. Of all my work experience this gig my most enjoyable one ever. It's unfortunate that I didn't get some pictures of this experience because I was busy doing "engineering stuff" for the Kapuso Network but the experience alone is enough to be included in my "most memorable experience" although mababaw pero masaya. But this doesn't end there, The month of April and May is still to come and I'm sure there will be more fun experiences to be expected. Till then keep on track.

Activites: Araw ng Dabaw coverage and GMA "Panata" shoot.
